Local camps

Girl CampingCamps are important partners for parents and children as they can play a vital role in helping kids continue to eat right and play hard all year long. Below are some things to consider when selecting a camp for your child.

Does the camp:

  • Have active role models (staff)?
  • Provide healthy options for all meals served?
  • Encourage eating breakfast?
  • Reduce "fast food" and junk food for snacks and side dishes (chips, cookies, candy, etc.)?
  • Educate children about healthy eating and knowing when to stop eating?
  • Offer a wide variety of new and traditional activities, sports, and games?
  • Have activity teams or "walking buddies" programs?
  • Provide positive feedback by emphasizing participation rather than winning or being the best?
  • Focus on fun and gaining a healthier lifestyle?

Tip of the Day 3

Start small. This week, provide a healthy after-school snack like an apple instead of one high in sugar or fat.
