"I've found a good book for teens to counter their love of junk food - it's called 'Junk Food Hero' by Pat Swindells and it's aimed at high school students who like to play computer games and eat a lot of fast food. The central character, George, finds out that what he's eating is going to shorten his life and decides to change his diet and lifestyle, becoming smarter and cooler in the process."

"“We at GRHF agree with Holly that PTAs and PTOs are great resources in our campaign to help kids be healthy. But we need to be careful that what we offer as ‘healthy’ really is. For instance—many fruit juice drinks are very high in sugar. It’s important to look at the label and when purchasing juice only purchase 100% fruit juice.
Holly- Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and keep in touch!”"

"I see a lot of people concerned about the school lunches, try your PTA or PTO. They are a great resource, we were able to get healthier choices in the vending machines such as drinkable yogurt, Izzis ( spring water and fruit juice drink ) and sun chips. The breakfast and lunch was evaluated and improved. Your Board of Education is another place to ask for help but you will want to go with a group, they like to know there are a lot of people with a problem. Good luck!!"

"The school lunches are so unhealthy is why we pack our childrens lunches. You would think it would be in school as we are at home. They have the posters about being a healthy hero throughout school but serve such awful food.It makes no sense. the only thing I'm guessing is the garbage they serve is low cost compared to alternatives. Is there any place to start with this type of issue?"

"Todd of El Paso, TX-- you can listen to the lyrics of the song by going back on to the homepage of the website. Under the picture of the little girl eating an apple, there is a hyperlink for "see the whole campaign". Click there and you can listen to the jingle."

"I am all for having my children eat healthier, I have a 14 yr old who needs to, My five yr old is very picky and will only eat greens beans no other veggie but does love all kinds of fruits.
I want to know what we can do as parents about school lunches I don't thinks that Tyson Chicken Nuggets or Patties are healthy . Or having the option to buy pizza everyday. If anyone has any suggestions on how to approach this please let me know"

"Dear Julie, You have done the right thing in talking with your pediatrician about your daughter’s appetite—and you should talk with him/her without your daughter being present if this continues to be a concern. Try engaging her and the rest of your family in activities after meals that may keep her mind off of food. Good Luck with this and remember to keep active and eating healthy. Thanks for the compliment on the jingle—it is catchy!"

"I have three active and healthy daughters, but the youngest, who is 9, is ALWAYS hungary! She wants thirds at meals, always asks for snacks, and never seems satisfied. Our pediatrician says no thirds, fruit and veg only for snacks, and lots of water. I agree with this, but I hate to hear her ask me for food all the time. Why is her appetite so different from her older sisters? She could eat more at a sitting than my husband. What should we do?
Our whole family loves the 5210 jingle."

Thanks in advance!"

"How can we help our school s (Plank South) provide healthy lunches for our children? Or at least help the children to understand what choices are healthy in the lunch line and which are not? Honestly- it's 2009, does the school NEED to serve peanut butter and fluffernutter on white bread everyday?"

"My 4 year old son (me 2) love the jingle... Catchy and helpful reminder. He walks around with an apple and says, 'I'm being a Healthy Hero". Well done! I am a RN and see the increased complications of ill health with younger and younger people. Thanks for your campaign."

"I've been asking my child's doctor's for the last 7 years about her weight and have been told that she's active and doesn't like sweets, so I shouldn't be concerned. Now, 7 years later, I'm being told that she's in the 95% for her BMI and she should discuss this with her doctor. Don't wait if you're concerned. Take actiion on your own. Now, she's a teen and it's not as easy to influence her in her eating habits and portions. Heart disease runs in our family and I'm very worried about her. If she doesn't buy into any plan, it won't work for her. Any ideas?"
