Talking with your child's school is another important way to ensure that your child is getting the proper physical activity and nutrition they need to grow healthy and strong. Think about how much time your child  spends at school.

School age children spend the majority of their weekday hours at school in class, gym, recess and even in before or after school programs.  During this time it is likely that your child may consume at least 1-2 meals, some snacks, and some form of physical activity. 

Did you know that your child may actually do better in school if they eat a healthy meal and are physically active almost every day?

Studies have shown that healthy school breakfast programs have helped kids:

  • Improve academic, behavioral, and emotional functioning
  • Increase math grades
  • Improve attendance
  • Improve behavior

  • New York State does NOT have obesity–related standards in schools related to:
    • Nutritional standards for school meals or other foods (a la carte foods).
    • Non-invasive screening for diabetes.

Many schools are:

  • Limiting the sale of less nutritious foods
  • Improving physical education
  • Improving health education
